Overview

UPMC Magee’s Fertility Preservation Program and Center for Reproduction and Transplantation are enrolling participants in research on tissue freezing and transplantation. If you’ve previously cryopreserved ovarian or testicular tissue—or you’re facing treatment that risks fertility—you may qualify. Many protocols cover the cost of surgery, tissue processing/freezing, and the first year of storage.

Testicular Tissue (TT) Freezing — Oncology

IRB-approved research for males of any age with two testes who face infertility risk from disease or treatment (e.g., chemo/radiation). For those not yet producing sperm or unable to provide a semen sample; techniques are in development to use frozen tissue to produce sperm/restore fertility.

Testicular Tissue (TT) Freezing — Transgender Care

IRB-approved experimental protocol for transgender individuals (age 9+) with testes, diagnosed with gender dysphoria, starting or on gender-affirming therapy and not wishing to undergo male puberty to produce sperm. Techniques are in development to use frozen tissue for future fertility.

Ovarian Tissue (OT) Freezing — Oncology

IRB-approved experimental protocol for women under 40 with newly diagnosed or recurrent disease or treatment that significantly risks fertility. For those not yet producing mature eggs or unable to pursue egg freezing, frozen ovarian tissue may help restore fertility or hormone function in the future.

Ovarian Tissue (OT) Freezing — Transgender Care

IRB-approved experimental protocol for transgender individuals (age 9+) with ovaries, diagnosed with gender dysphoria, starting or on gender-affirming therapy and not wishing to undergo female puberty or egg retrieval. Techniques are in development to use frozen tissue to mature eggs/preserve fertility.

Ovarian Tissue Transplantation

IRB-approved experimental protocol for women ages 18–45 with previously stored ovarian cortical tissue available for autologous transplantation, with ovarian insufficiency, and medical clearance from the treating physician; candidates for pregnancy if desired.

Testicular Tissue Transplantation

IRB-approved experimental protocol for males at least Tanner Stage 3, with previously stored testicular tissue available for autologous transplantation, in reasonably good health, and with medical clearance from the treating physician.
